Basilica of the Sacred Heart

Basilica of the Sacred Heart is on the University of Notre Dame campus at 101 Basilica Dr. Built in the late 1800s, the neo-Gothic church features one of the largest collections of 19th-century French stained glass in the world. Rich, detailed murals by Vatican artist Luigi Gregori cover the walls and ceiling. Built in the shape of a Latin cross, the basilica includes a chancel and apsidal chapels that contain relics and works of art.

Center for History

Center for History is at 808 W. Washington St. Artifacts, photographs and video presentations tell the history of the St. Joseph River Valley region. On site is Copshaholm, the former home of J.D. Oliver, president of the Oliver Chilled Plow Works. The 38-room mansion contains leaded glass windows, parquet floors, 14 fireplaces and original furnishings, reflecting the Oliver family's era. The 2.5-acre grounds feature formal Italianate and rose gardens as well as a tea house, pergola, fountain and carriage house. Also on the grounds is the Worker's Home, which shows how a working-class family might have lived in the 1930s. Nine exhibits at the Center for History trace the valley's past from prehistoric times to the industries of the early 1900s. The history of the University of Notre Dame is chronicled in the Raclin Gallery. Kidsfirst Children's Museum offers a playful setting that includes a canoe, a Conestoga wagon and a log cabin. College Football Hall of Fame

College Football Hall of Fame is at 111 S. St. Joseph. This 58,000-square-foot museum houses historic artifacts, mementos, photographs and interactive exhibits. In addition, it is a caretaker of college football history and features archives and a library. Various galleries focus on different aspects of the game. The Locker Room provides a look at the way coaches train and inspire players. Visitors can test their football skills through a series of challenges and activities in the Training Center. The Pigskin Pageantry area is an interactive salute to fans, cheerleaders, marching bands and mascots. Other galleries highlight the media, equipment, bowl games and national championships. In the Hall of Honor, more than 900 coaches and players are recognized. The Stadium Theater catches the action of a college football game. Food is available. Allow 2 hours minimum.

Main Building (Golden Dome)

Main Building (Golden Dome) is at the heart of the University of Notre Dame campus. The magnificent dome is surmounted by a statue of the Virgin Mary. The murals depicting the life of Christopher Columbus are the work of Luigi Gregori, a Vatican artist who spent 17 years at Notre Dame. A $58 million renovation has restored the five-story Victorian building's woodwork, lighting fixtures and walls.

Potawatomi Zoo is 1.5 mi. e. on Jefferson Blvd., then .2 mi. s. on Greenlawn Ave. Bison, camels, lions, monkeys, red pandas, snow leopards and venomous snakes are among the 400 creatures featured on 23 wooded acres. A petting zoo also is available. Allow 1 hour minimum.

Studebaker National Museum

Studebaker National Museum is at 201 S. Chapin St. Exhibits include horse-drawn and motorized Studebaker vehicles manufactured in South Bend. Some of the motor vehicles set speed and endurance records in the 1920s. In addition, the museum details the economic development of the area. Highlights include carriages belonging to Presidents Grant and McKinley and the carriage in which President Lincoln rode to Ford's Theater. Allow 2 hours minimum.

Theodore M. Hesburgh Library is at the east quadrangle on the University of Notre Dame campus. The 14-story library holds nearly 3 million research volumes and can accommodate more than half the student body. "The Word of Life," a massive granite mosaic, covers the southern wall. Football fans can see this figure of Christ, raising his hands in benediction, from the north goal post--hence the nickname, "Touchdown Jesus.

University of Notre Dame is off I-80/90 exit 77, s. on US 31/SR 933 (Michigan St.) to Angela Blvd., then e. to Notre Dame Ave. following signs. The 1,250-acre main campus was founded in 1842 on the site of an early mission. The Log Chapel at the edge of St. Mary's Lake is a replica of the chapel built in 1830 by Father Stephen Badin, the first Roman Catholic priest ordained in the United States. The Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes is a beautiful reproduction of the Grotto of Lourdes in France. Eck Visitors' Center features historical displays, an aerial map, interactive kiosks and a 20-minute movie about the Notre Dame tradition.
